Master the In&out — BTL: Elite Handle & Rhythm
The In&out — BTL is a fundamental combination drill designed to sharpen your ball handling, rhythm, and ability to shift gears instantly. This drill is essential for guards and wings who need to freeze a defender with a hesitation move before exploding into a protected change of direction. By mastering the contrast between the floating "in-and-out" dribble and the aggressive "between-the-legs" cross, you will develop the deceptive handle required to create space at the high school and collegiate levels.
How to Perform This Drill
- Setup: Assume a strong athletic stance with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and your knees bent. Start with the ball in your right hand.
- Float: Execute a high, relaxed In & Out dribble. This is your "slow" move—use your head and shoulders to sell a fake crossover to your left.
- Drop: As the ball returns to your right hand, immediately drop your hips and shift your weight.
- Attack: Drive the ball hard and fast between your legs to your left hand. This is your "fast" move—it must be sharp and low.
- Reset: Catch the ball with your left hand, regain your rhythm, and immediately flow into the next repetition starting from the left side.
- Duration: Complete 20 clean repetitions, focusing on the distinct change of speed between the two moves.
Why This Drill Works
Great ball handlers don't just move fast; they manipulate rhythm. This drill works because it forces you to practice "Change of Pace" mechanics in a controlled environment. The initial In & Out move engages the defender's feet and raises their center of gravity, while the explosive Between The Legs dribble allows you to attack their leverage while protecting the ball from a steal. This creates the muscle memory needed to navigate traffic and keep defenders off balance in real game situations.
Pro Tips
- Sell with your eyes: Your feet aren't enough to fool a good defender. On the In & Out, look in the direction of the fake; if your eyes don't sell the move, the defender won't bite.
- Change levels: Keep your In & Out dribble higher (chest/waist level) to lull the defender to sleep, then snap the BTL dribble below your knees. The lower the ball, the quicker the cross.
- Snap the wrist: Don't just guide the ball between your legs. Pound it through with force to increase ball speed and reduce the time the ball is exposed to the defense.
- Stay wide: Keep your base wide throughout the drill. Narrow feet make you easy to bump off your line; a wide base keeps you balanced and ready to absorb contact.
