Coach Dan

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Power Step Up and Under: Dominate the Paint

The Power Step Up and Under is a fundamental finishing drill designed to transform your low-post scoring efficiency. Whether you are a center battling on the block or a guard posting up a smaller defender, this drill sharpens your footwork, body control, and ability to finish around the rim. By combining an explosive catch with a disciplined shot fake, you will learn to neutralize aggressive shot blockers and create easy scoring opportunities in the paint.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself on the low block with your back facing the basket. Adopt a wide, athletic stance to establish your base.
  2. Initiate: Flick the basketball out in front of you with backspin to simulate an entry pass. As the ball is in the air, make an explosive power step toward it to meet the pass.
  3. Catch and Face: Catch the ball with a strong two-foot landing (jump stop). Immediately "chin the ball" (hold it strong under your chin with elbows out) and pivot aggressively to face the hoop.
  4. The Fake: Execute a hard pump fake (the "up" move). Keep your eyes on the rim and lift your shoulders to sell the shot, forcing the imaginary defender to leave their feet.
  5. The Step Through: While keeping your pivot foot planted, step your free leg across and under the defender's arm. Protect the ball by keeping it away from the defense.
  6. Finish: Extend towards the basket and finish with a layup off the glass, focusing on a soft touch.

Why This Drill Works

This drill bridges the gap between static shooting and live game reactions. In a real game, defenders often over-commit to the initial shot attempt; the "up and under" exploits this aggression by using their momentum against them. By drilling the specific footwork required to step through traffic, you develop the muscle memory needed to remain balanced and composed in the chaotic environment of the key. It reinforces the discipline of staying on the floor while your opponent flies by, allowing you to draw fouls and finish strong.

Pro Tips

  • Sell with Your Eyes: A fake isn't convincing if you don't look at the target. On your pump fake, lock your eyes on the rim to freeze the defender.
  • Keep it High: Never bring the ball down below your waist after the catch. Bringing the ball down exposes it to stripping by smaller guards ("digging"); keep it chinned and protected.
  • Stay Low: Maintain a low center of gravity throughout the pivot and step-through. The lower player wins the leverage battle and maintains better balance through contact.
  • Create Space: Your step-through needs to be long and aggressive. Create as much distance as possible from your pivot foot to the rim to seal off the defender behind you.
